Where does idiocy like this come from? Not the tabloids - they are way too sophisticated for such petty, bush league bullshit. No, it comes from people who are still having tantrums of outrage and shock because Bill Clinton had the audacity to get himself elected President of the United States twice, when that office has been deemed by God Himself to be filled by a conservative Republican. The Reverend Jerry Falwell came up with the drug dealer / State Trooper fairy tale and he will sell you a 40 dollar videotape which explains the whole thing. Conservative newspaper owner Richard Mellon Scaife and one of his lackeys, Christopher Ruddy, are even more prolific, having concocted both the Vince Foster and Ron Brown stories.
This could all be dismissed as humorous, mindless entertainment if that's as far as it went, but as usual, it's gone way beyond that. These storytellers aren't stupid, but their intended audiences are. The dim-witted morons who can actually eat this swill without puking have neither the ability nor the inclination to think for themselves and can state their entire inventory of opinion on the great issues of the day with a zombie-like "Yeah - What Rush said!"
The diabolical Scaife and Ruddy wanted to make sure their latest yarn got as much publicity as possible, so they craftily made their alleged victim a black man and, sure enough, the usual activists came crawling out of the woodwork. Dick Gregory, who calls himself a comedian but hasn't said anything funny in about 15 years, got arrested this week at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology where Brown's autopsy was conducted. Dick put yellow police tape up around the building and called it a crime scene. And Representative Maxine "The CIA is selling drugs to ghetto residents" Waters of California is demanding an immediate investigation. The conservative right and the NAACP make for some very strange bed-fellows.
OK, there's a lot not to like about Bill Clinton. He's a slippery, sexist pig and he's cheapened the presidency, but the actions of his opponents go way beyond political disagreement and make Bill look like a moral authority in comparison. This is just immature ball-busting, pure and simple, aimed at the more intellectually challenged among us, and it makes our already coarse and mean world just a bit worse. And, by the way, if you haven't heard the Diana, Farley or Buddy rumors yet, remember, you read them here first.
