Creep of the Week - June 8, 1996

Al D'Amato

They call him Senator Pothole. He's also called Alfonse D'Amato, United States Senator, Chairman of the Senate Banking and Whitewater Committees, and New York's contribution to chicanery and buffoonery in government. You may remember his embarrassing performance of "Old McDonald" on the Senate floor several years ago during a budget debate. You may also remember that he's been the subject of several investigations by the Ethics committee, where he barely escaped censure. This week, Al once again humiliated his constituents and his fellow Republicans (but not himself) when a Securities and Exchange Commission report found that he received special treatment from a brokerage firm in 1993, allowing him to make a $37,000 profit in one day. When asked about this at the time, Al denied any impropriety and declared, "I am no Hillary Clinton."

Interesting comment. Al's spent the last two years holding hearings on Whitewater and has come up with exactly nothing. He even spent some time reviewing Hillary's success in the commodities market, voicing the suspicion that she received - brace yourself - "special treatment". Pretty strong stuff. His comment this week about the SEC report described it as "an old story". Hey Al - so's Whitewater.

From the Republicans we hear a lot of hand wringing and blaming the press about the fact that Whitewater does not seem to have had much effect on the public's opinion of the Clintons. Maybe appointing such a hellraising, hysterical hypocrite to lead up the investigation could have something to do with it. Maybe the public is a little smarter than the politicians give them credit for. Maybe Honest Al should worry about his own glass house before throwing more stones. After he's booted out of the Senate, he should consider a career as a piano player in a whore house. He could continue to sing songs and perform while pretending to be ignorant about what's going on upstairs.
