Pro-Life Most of the Time

This has been a big week for unrepentant killers who fantasize that they're completely justified in murdering people because they believe in their causes so passionately. Slobodan Milosevic, the former Serbian president who's known as the Butcher of the Balkans, is under house arrest for being a sadistic war criminal. Timothy McVeigh, who killed 168 people at the Oklahoma City Federal Building, finally admitted he did it, essentially saying, "Yeah, I killed the bastards. What are you going to do about it? Execute me?" And James Kopp, wanted for the pro-life killing of abortion doctor Barnett Slepian in 1998, got caught while on the lam in France.

James has been a ramblin' man since he shot the doc, spending time in Mexico and Ireland. He ditched Ireland for France last month when he felt the FBI breathing down his Top Ten Most Wanted neck, narrowly missing capture and completely missing St. Patrick's Day. During his travels, he's been helped by the cottage industry of "Pro-Life Most of the Time" supporters who think guys like James are doing the Lord's work. Two of his benefactors, Dennis Malvasi and Loretta Marra, got busted at their home in Brooklyn at the same time he did. Dennis and Loretta had been sending James money and fake IDs, and it was their email connection to him that provided the snooping feds all the clues they needed to set up the arrest in France. They snared James at a post office as he attempted to pick up a package from Dennis and Loretta containing $300 in cash.

We don't know yet why James chose to flee to France (Bordeaux? Brigitte Bardot? RU-486?) but it turned out to be a lucky move. France no longer has a death penalty (what happened to all those guillotines?) and they're been reluctant to extradite criminals to countries where they might fry. Therefore, the US government will probably have to promise not to execute him in order to get him back from France. How do you suppose a deep thinker like George W resolves a dilemma like that? "I love executing murderers, but I gotta keep the pro-lifers happy, and Dick's been no help since that last heart thing, and McCain's been kicking my ass all week long with this campaign reform crap, and I know how bad James must feel having missed St. Patrick's Day, and Damn, I sure wish I was back in Mexico snorting coke with a succulent senorita on my lap."

Interestingly enough, all this occurred during the same week that a federal court in San Francisco ruled that a "Pro-Life Most of the Time" web site was protected by the First Amendment when it listed the names and addresses of abortion doctors. The Nuremberg Files site featured old west-style wanted posters describing the doctors as "baby butchers," and declaring them guilty of crimes against humanity. The day James shot Barnett Slepian, the doctor's wanted poster was crossed out on the site.

Even more interestingly, it was James' wanted poster on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted site that got crossed off this week, as pictured above. I guess we won't get to see a red slash saying "Executed" through his picture, but we may see one saying "Extradited" or "Jailed Forever" or "Having Constant Non-Consensual Sex With His New Roommate Leroy."

James, Timothy, Slobodan. What's the difference? It's a matter of quantity, not quality.
